Unfinished Business Questions due Thursday.  Just have these questions completed for Thursday and don't worry about March 20th questions.

1).  What is the purpose of the author when talking about working with the children.
2). Can you find evidence of any of the stages of grief in the story.
3). What are the opinions of each of the children?
4). What "coping mechanism" do people have when grieving?  This question is calling on our own experience.

March 20th

Monday - just read
Tuesday - Mr. Boyd will read with you starting around the middle of the story so we can finish in class
Thursday - a few homework questions to answer -

1). Now knowing the 5 stages of Grief (death), find examples of these in the story.
2). If you only had a few days to live, what would you do?

I am not here today.  Go into these groups and compare your answers with your group members.  Make a final copy of your answers as a group.  Tomorrow, your group will hand in one paper with all 19 answers.  We will have a discussion and begin a new story on Tuesday.

Today's class was an example of just how much work can be done in about 45 minutes.  If you put forth 45 minutes of work and reading like you did today, understanding story and enjoying it will come easier!

Hello grade 9's,
I'm obviously not in school and won't be until Thursday when I will give you the quiz then.  Begin to read the next story "The Great Tao Bank Robbery" pg. 788.  To be read by Thursday.

I will be concentrating on Irony and will be asking you that question on the quiz.  Of course that won't be the only question so read carefully and prepare for Thursday!

Dramatic Performance Assignment for "Trifles"

Your presentation will be due Friday, March 3rd.  Your presentation should be no more than 10 minutes long. You have today and next Thursday to work on your presentation.

Dramatic Dialogue Presentation

Sometimes authors use dramatic pieces to deliver certain messages about society, politics, economics or for humor.  The focus of this term is on Allusion, Irony and reflection in a variety of texts.  The author of Trifles, Susan Glaspell uses dialogue to point out differences and issues in society.  It is important to note that not all messages are clear so it is important to read the dialogue carefully.

Your Assignment:

In groups of 5, already assigned by Mr. Boyd, you are to present a particular scene in the play which demonstrates a focus on Allusion, Irony or reflection (choose one within your pages).  At the same time, it should be obvious about a theme which may be an injustice, issue, a social problem etc.  Remember to only do one scene.  Each member should have a role in the drama.  This doesn’t mean each person has to speak but they must contribute to the scene somehow and it is obvious to the audience.

This story is about putting clues together and inferring what happened or what is about to happen.  Pay close attention to the dialogue for clues on what kind of comments the author is making indirectly. 

Each group must cover one set of pages.

2. pg. 776 – end of 777 (Benjamin, Rick, Kent, Vic, Kevin)

3. pg. 778 – end of 781 (Brian, Summer, Denny, Jerry, Jason)

After reading the drama, answer the following questions:

A). What does this play say about men? Women? How both men and women interact with each other? 

B). In 2 paragraphs, analyze the relationship between two characters in the story.  Think about the conflict between them and possible reasons why they treat each other the way they do.

C). What kind of Irony is present in the play?  Explain your answer with examples.

D). What is the overall theme of this play? What does trifles mean?

E). Write a different ending from the one in the story and explain how this changes the play.
